Dominican Republic joins Geneva Consensus Declaration

The Dominican Republic has formally joined the Geneva Consensus Declaration, an international initiative focused on promoting women's health, protecting life, and strengthening the family. The agreement was signed by Foreign Minister Víctor Ito Bisonó Haza and U.S. Ambassador Leah Francis Campos, with participation from Bethany Kozma, Secretary of the Declaration.

Ambassador Campos defended the move, stating that the consensus strengthens national sovereignty by allowing states to define their own policies without pressure from globalist NGOs or multilateral organizations. She emphasized that the declaration supports traditional values and the right of nations to legislate according to their own constitutional frameworks.

However, the decision has faced significant opposition from social, feminist, and human rights organizations. These groups argue that the declaration contradicts the Dominican Constitution and international human rights commitments. They warn that while the document is not a legally binding treaty, its adoption could lead to policies that undermine reproductive rights and the established distribution of powers within the state.
