US Ambassador proposes expanded security cooperation with Mexico

U.S. Ambassador Ronald Johnson has proposed expanding security cooperation with Mexico to combat transnational criminal organizations and cartels. Speaking at the American Society of Mexico (Amsoc) Binational Convention, Johnson emphasized that the United States seeks to work closely with the Mexican government without being interventionist.

Johnson framed the fight against organized crime as a matter of national sovereignty, stating that the U.S. wants to see a Mexico that is free from both malicious external interference and internal control by criminal groups. He noted that the U.S. administration is shifting its strategy to target the entire criminal network, including traffickers, financiers, facilitators, and front companies.

The ambassador defended the designation of certain cartels as foreign terrorist organizations, noting that this status provides additional tools to identify and disrupt their financial structures. He also acknowledged progress in bilateral efforts, including increased seizures by Mexican authorities and improved coordination regarding border security and irregular crossings.
