US Ambassador Ronald Johnson reports security cooperation successes with Mexico

US Ambassador to Mexico Ronald Johnson has reported significant results in bilateral security, migration, and border protection efforts under the leadership of President Donald Trump. During the Milken Institute Global Investor Conference, Johnson highlighted a 95 percent decrease in Border Patrol detentions on the US southwest border over the last 12 months, reaching a historic low. He also noted that the “zero releases” policy for illegal migrants has been maintained for 17 consecutive months as of September 2026.

In the fight against narcotics, Johnson stated that US-Mexico cooperation has contributed to a 40 percent reduction in US overdose deaths compared to peak crisis levels, an achievement estimated to have saved over 40,000 lives. Furthermore, using US intelligence, Mexican authorities have seized more than 500 metric tons of illicit drugs, including 9.5 million fentanyl pills. Coordinated maritime operations with the US Coast Guard and Navy also resulted in the seizure of approximately 90 metric tons of cocaine.

Addressing the designation of cartels as terrorist organizations, Johnson clarified that the goal is to utilize financial and legal tools, such as economic sanctions, to dismantle international criminal networks rather than conducting military strikes in Mexican territory. However, the diplomatic exchange has drawn criticism from the Chinese Embassy in Mexico, which accused the US of fueling drug violence through domestic demand and illegal arms trafficking.
