US Ambassador Tilman Fertitta says US‑Italy bond remains strong at Villa Taverna

The United States celebrated its Independence Day at Villa Taverna in Rome, hosting a reception attended by Italian ministers, entrepreneurs and US Ambassador Tilman J. Fertitta. The event was framed as a diplomatic effort to cool tensions that had risen after former President Donald Trump’s remarks toward Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. While Prime Minister Meloni was absent, citing a labour summit in Padua, the ambassador stressed that “the special bond remains strong,” highlighting continued cooperation in NATO, joint defense projects such as the F‑35 programme, and a bilateral trade volume exceeding $100 billion annually.

Fertitta also referenced collaborative work on climate initiatives, hydrogen, AI and cybersecurity, as well as cultural and academic exchanges through Fulbright and university partnerships. The reception featured a jazz band, a toast, and remarks from Italian officials reinforcing Italy’s commitment to its US partnership across security, economic and scientific domains.
