US Ambassador to NATO warns of relationship reevaluation over troop access

US Ambassador to NATO Matthew Whitaker has stated that the United States may reevaluate its relationships with NATO allies if they deny American troops access to military bases or airspace during future operations.

Speaking at the Euronews Defence and Space Summit, Whitaker explained that Washington is currently reviewing the deployment and basing structure of US forces within NATO territory. This review follows logistical difficulties encountered during ‘Operation Epic Fury’, a conflict involving the US, Israel, and Iran, where certain allies restricted access to their infrastructure.

Whitaker noted that the US is in discussions with the specific countries that limited access to ensure such issues do not recur. He emphasized that the review is driven by the Trump administration’s ‘America First’ policy, which prioritizes the interests of the United States and its taxpayers. Whitaker also dismissed reports claiming that up to 40,000 soldiers might be withdrawn from NATO territory, calling such claims incorrect.
