US and Mexico target cartel finances through increased cooperation
U.S. Ambassador to Mexico Ronald Johnson has called for intensified efforts to dismantle the financial structures of drug cartels. Speaking at the CI-FIRST International Financial Crimes Forum, Johnson emphasized that targeting criminal finances is more effective than seizing drugs or weapons, as it strikes the 'heart' of criminal networks and prevents them from reorganizing.
The strategy, supported by the administrations of President Donald Trump and President Claudia Sheinbaum, focuses on tracking illicit money flows, identifying facilitators, and utilizing real-time information exchange between authorities. The forum brought together government experts, financial intelligence units, law enforcement, and the private banking sector to connect suspicious transactions to broader criminal networks.
Johnson also highlighted the necessity of combating corruption, noting that it facilitates criminal operations while deterring legitimate investment and harming citizens. Meanwhile, Omar Reyes Colmenares, head of Mexico's Financial Intelligence Unit (UIF), reported that the agency has frozen over 24,000 accounts between 2024 and 2026.
