US and Canada drilling rig counts increase

Drilling activity in the United States and Canada has increased according to the latest Baker Hughes data. In the US, the total rig count rose to 593 for the week ending August 14, marking the highest level since March 2025. This increase includes one additional oil rig and four additional gas rigs. The US rig count is currently 54 higher than the same period last year.

In Canada, the weekly rig count reached 219 active rigs, driven by an increase of five oil rigs, despite a decrease of two miscellaneous rigs. Drilling activity in Canada has been trending upward since its seasonal low in May.

Regional data for the US shows the Permian Basin rig count rose to 265, while the Eagle Ford count remained steady at 49. US crude oil production averaged 13.805 million barrels per day during the reporting period, a slight increase from the previous week.
