US and Canada engage in retaliatory tariff exchange

The trade relationship between the United States and Canada has entered a period of heightened tension following the implementation of reciprocal tariffs. On August 22, the United States imposed a 50% tariff on C$27.6 billion worth of Canadian goods. In response, Canada implemented retaliatory tariffs on September 8 targeting C$27.6 billion of U.S.-origin imports.

Canada’s counter-tariffs include surtax rates of 15%, 25%, or 50%, depending on the specific product classification and its corresponding U.S. tariff treatment. These measures create significant uncertainty for e-commerce operators, as landed costs are now heavily influenced by product-level factors such as country of origin, customs value, and specific regulatory classifications.

For businesses operating within this trade corridor, the shifting environment necessitates closer monitoring of trade rules, a re-evaluation of fulfillment strategies, and a detailed understanding of tariff exposure at the SKU level to protect product economics and customer experience.
