U.S. and China clash over technology in Dominican Republic

The United States and China are engaged in a technological dispute within the Dominican Republic. The U.S. Embassy in Santo Domingo issued a warning regarding the security of Chinese technologies, specifically naming companies such as Huawei, ZTE, Hikvision, Hytera, Dahua, and DJI.

Washington expressed concerns that these technologies could pose risks of espionage, cyberattacks, and network disruptions, noting that these companies are subject to Chinese laws. The U.S. urged partners in the Americas to replace such equipment with providers deemed reliable. However, the warning did not cite specific Dominican institutions affected or provide concrete evidence of espionage within the country.

China's ambassador to Santo Domingo, Chen Luning, rejected these claims, describing them as a misrepresentation of reality. He attributed the United States' stance to a ‘Cold War mentality’ and defended the conduct of Chinese technology firms.
