US and China negotiate AI security channels amid technological rivalry
Artificial intelligence has emerged as a central pillar of global geopolitics, particularly as the United States and China prepare for high-stakes discussions in Washington. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng recently met in New York to discuss establishing a dedicated dialogue and a notification mechanism to alert one another of AI-related national security threats.
These discussions aim to mitigate risks such as uncontrollable AI systems, cyberattacks, and the potential use of AI in developing biological weapons. A follow-up meeting is expected to take place in Shenzhen, China, within the next two months.
The competition between the two superpowers is also extending into the field of robotics. The US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has already taken steps to restrict certain advanced foreign robotic devices through its 'Covered List' to protect domestic security. Meanwhile, China is focused on scaling its production and integrating AI into sectors like electric vehicles, drones, and solar technology to secure global market dominance.
At the United Nations, AI safety has also become a priority. Industry leaders, including Sam Altman of OpenAI and Dario Amodei of Anthropic, have provided briefings to the UN Security Council regarding the rapid development of autonomous software and the potential for global instability.
