US and China discuss reciprocal visits to nuclear sites

The United States and China are engaged in preliminary, informal discussions regarding reciprocal visits to nuclear facilities. According to reports from CNN, the proposal for these visits was initially raised by Chinese officials during meetings with U.S. representatives earlier this year.

The discussions have focused on potential visits to U.S. Department of Energy national laboratories and equivalent Chinese facilities, with the possibility of including nuclear testing sites. These technical-level talks have largely occurred on the sidelines of United Nations Security Council permanent member meetings.

This development follows President Donald Trump’s recent call for trilateral arms control negotiations involving the U.S., China, and Russia. While the U.S. seeks to address concerns regarding China’s rapidly expanding nuclear arsenal, Beijing has maintained that its nuclear capacity is significantly smaller than those of the U.S. and Russia, making participation in such formal negotiations unnecessary.

U.S. officials hope these confidence-building measures could eventually pave the way for a broader trilateral agreement. Both nations are expected to continue these discussions in the coming months, potentially leading to further high-level engagement at upcoming summits like APEC or the G20.
