US and China escalate AI rivalry through Egyptian infrastructure and trade tensions

The technological rivalry between the United States and China is intensifying, particularly regarding artificial intelligence infrastructure and data sovereignty. In Egypt, a government tender to establish an AI data center has become a focal point of this confrontation. The United States has expressed urgent concerns regarding Huawei’s proposal to build data centers in Egypt intended for military, security, and government surveillance systems. Washington fears that such infrastructure could allow Beijing access to sensitive strategic data and facilitate the transfer of Chinese-style surveillance models to the region through technologies capable of identifying individuals via national databases.

Simultaneously, China has set preconditions for upcoming AI negotiations with the United States. Chinese state-affiliated media has demanded that the U.S. demonstrate that its own AI companies are subject to the same security, disclosure, and auditing standards before substantive talks can occur. China has also criticized the American AI firm Anthropic, accusing its Claude model of unauthorized data access and covert surveillance. These tensions escalate ahead of anticipated high-level diplomatic meetings between the two nations.
