US and China establish AI safety and military communication channels

Following a three-day summit in Washington, President Trump and President Xi Jinping have agreed to establish a communication channel specifically designed to handle incidents related to artificial intelligence. The two leaders also committed to accelerating work on military crisis communications to prevent potential disputes from escalating.

During the summit, discussions included the adoption of the term ‘super intelligence’ (SI) rather than ‘artificial intelligence’ to describe the technology. While establishing these safety and communication mechanisms, President Trump emphasized that the United States will not ‘integrate’ with China in the AI sector, citing a desire to maintain a technological lead of at least one to two years.

Additional outcomes include the activation of a Board of Trade to address bilateral investment and trade issues. The leaders are scheduled to meet again in November during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in Shenzhen, China.
