US and China hold talks on trade truce and AI cooperation

Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng and U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent are meeting to prepare for an upcoming summit between President Xi Jinping and President Donald Trump. A primary focus of these discussions is the impending expiration of a trade tariff truce on November 10.

In addition to economic negotiations, the two nations are discussing the establishment of a mutual “notification mechanism” regarding artificial intelligence. This proposed “U.S.-China AI Dialogue” aims to increase transparency and address shared objectives and threats related to national security incidents involving AI technology.

While the AI dialogue is expected to be in preliminary stages, focusing on setting an agenda rather than deep technical issues, U.S. officials emphasize the importance of managing the technological competition. Meanwhile, trade representatives are working to establish a Trade Board to act as a stabilizing force, potentially creating a list of “non-sensitive” products to facilitate smoother economic relations.
