US and EU coordinate new sanctions and nuclear monitoring for Iran
The United States and the European Union are coordinating a new package of intensified sanctions against Iran. These measures aim to target the country's banking sector and financial networks linked to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. Proposed actions include moving from nominal asset freezes to enforceable freezes on the assets of the Central Bank of Iran, major commercial banks, and various securities and accounts held in European financial institutions.
U.S. Treasury officials are working with the European Council to expand restrictions on financial channels used by Tehran, specifically those involving front companies and intermediaries used to sell oil and transfer revenues. This includes tightening ‘know your customer’ protocols within European banks to track the actual beneficiaries of financial transfers.
Simultaneously, Iran is reportedly intensifying efforts to fortify its nuclear and military facilities. Following recent strikes, Tehran has been moving nuclear-related equipment, including centrifuges and enriched uranium, to new, more secure locations, some believed to be under the control of the Revolutionary Guard.
Satellite imagery and diplomatic sources indicate that Iran is utilizing deep tunnels, concrete fortifications, and air defense systems to protect sites such as Minzadehi. Efforts include repairing damage from previous military confrontations and repurposing decommissioned military centers to house enrichment technology and equipment.
