DAX companies reduce debt as US banks widen profit lead
Major financial trends show DAX-listed companies have reduced their net financial debt by 22 percent to 196 billion euros since 2022, lowering their debt ratio from 30.8 to 19.8 percent. During this period, equity for these companies rose by 21 percent to a record 991 billion euros. While Deutsche Telekom remains the most heavily indebted in absolute terms at 132 billion euros, eleven DAX companies, including BMW and Volkswagen, hold more liquid assets than debt.
In the banking sector, the ten largest European banks saw net profits rise by 21 percent to nearly 59 billion euros in the first half of 2026. However, US banks outperformed with a 42 percent profit increase, reaching 111 billion euros. In Germany, the return on equity for significant institutions supervised by the European Central Bank was approximately 6.38 percent in the fourth quarter of 2025.
In the United Kingdom, discussions continue regarding an accelerated oil windfall tax. Critics argue that while the tax provides immediate revenue for the Treasury, it may discourage investment in domestic oil and gas production, potentially increasing long-term import dependency.
Separately, Loews Corporation stock reached a 52-week high of 94.36 USD, reflecting a year-to-date increase of over 40 percent.
