US and German leaders discuss peace initiatives for Ukraine

Diplomatic efforts to end the war between Russia and Ukraine have resurfaced following a six-month hiatus. US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner recently visited both Moscow and Kyiv to facilitate renewed peace conversations. During these visits, representatives from France, Germany, and the United Kingdom also engaged with Ukrainian officials to discuss the contents of the American meetings with Vladimir Putin.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed willingness to meet Vladimir Putin during the G20 summit in December, though the Kremlin has rejected the proposal. While Russian spokesperson Dmitri Peskov did not rule out negotiations involving Russia, Ukraine, and the United States in October, the European Commission remains skeptical, stating that the necessary Russian will to negotiate is currently absent.

In a separate development, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz discussed potential steps to end the conflict with US President Donald Trump. The discussions occurred amidst a renewed diplomatic push from Washington and included topics such as the Middle East conflict and recent US legislation regarding sanctions against Russia and Iran. On the ground, the conflict continues with daily long-range attacks impacting Ukraine's metallurgy and agricultural sectors.
