US expands sanctions on Iran via Operation Economic Exclusion
The United States has launched ‘Operation Economic Exclusion’ to intensify economic pressure on Iran. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced expanded sanctions targeting the cryptocurrency, gold, technology, aviation, and maritime sectors. The initiative aims to sever Iran’s global financial links, with the US warning that third-party entities trading with Iran could face secondary sanctions. Over 60 individuals, organizations, and vessels have been added to the sanctions list.
Amidst these escalations, reports have emerged regarding a potential ceasefire. Unnamed sources from Pakistan and Iran suggest an agreement may be imminent, potentially involving free navigation through the Strait of Hormuz. This follows claims by President Donald Trump that the US Navy has successfully removed or detonated all mines within the international waters of the waterway.
In response to the economic measures, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian stated that while Tehran remains committed to negotiation, it will firmly resist economic pressures. He noted that war is not always a solution to crises. Simultaneously, Iran and Oman are discussing a joint framework to establish a temporary, mine-free shipping corridor through the Strait of Hormuz to ensure maritime safety.
