The U.S. Space Force and Japan successfully launched new military satellites from the Tanegashima Space Center on August 20, 2026, to enhance space surveillance and security in the Pacific region.

The mission utilized the Japanese Quasi-Zenith Satellite 7, which hosted a U.S. military payload developed by the MIT Lincoln Laboratory. This operation marks the conclusion of the Quasi-Zenith Satellite System-Hosted Payload program, the first cooperative effort between the two nations focused on national security and orbital infrastructure sharing.

The Japanese satellites were developed by Mitsubishi Electric Corporation. The program aims to provide real-time geosynchronous data to improve domain awareness in the Indo-Pacific. Military officials noted that the integration of these capabilities is a strategic step toward addressing threats from peer adversaries in space.
