Colombia's contested presidential transition sparks regional calls for peaceful power handover

President Gustavo Petro has refused to recognize the June 21 runoff results that declared right‑wing candidate Abelardo de la Espriella the winner. Petro announced he will leave office on 6 August but continued to dispute the legitimacy of the vote, prompting de la Espriella to suspend the formal transition process.

The United States and twelve members of the “Shield of the Americas” alliance (Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guyana, Honduras, Panama, Paraguay and Trinidad and Tobago) issued a joint statement urging Colombian authorities to respect the constitution, the certified election results and to guarantee a peaceful, orderly and transparent transfer of power. The statement expressed “deep concern” over Petro’s unsubstantiated claims.

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva received a call from Petro in which the Colombian leader reaffirmed his commitment to a peaceful transition. Colombian universities and former President Ernesto Samper also called on Petro to respect the electoral outcome and avoid turning the handover into a new political front.

The dispute has halted technical hand‑over meetings, raised fears of institutional instability and drawn international attention to Colombia’s democratic process.
