US and Mexico migration: Detentions fall while ICE custody deaths reach record high
Data from the International Organization for Migration indicates that detentions of migrants from El Salvador, Honduras, and Guatemala in the United States and Mexico fell by approximately 50% during the first half of 2026. Specifically, U.S. detentions of these nationals dropped by 39% to 12,082, while Mexican detentions saw a 59.5% decrease compared to the same period in 2025.
In Colorado, the Colorado Rapid Response Network (CORRN) reported a shift in enforcement tactics. While arrests in private residences decreased from 30% to 20%, immigration-related detentions in public spaces and workplaces rose from 37% in 2025 to 48% in the first seven months of 2026.
Concurrently, official records confirmed by the Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs show that 58 foreign nationals have died under the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) or during migration operations during the second Trump administration. Mexican nationals accounted for 31% of these deaths, with 18 individuals recorded. Fiscal year 2026 was identified as the deadliest year in ICE history, with 37 deaths in custody.
