US and New Zealand authorities pursue major fraud investigations

Authorities in the United States and New Zealand are addressing separate cases of significant financial fraud involving public funds and institutions.

In Southern California, federal prosecutors and the IRS have charged 12 individuals for allegedly defrauding government childcare subsidy programs of more than US$10 million. The defendants reportedly operated licensed at-home childcare facilities that submitted fraudulent attendance records for children who were rarely, if ever, actually present. These federally funded programs are designed to assist low-income families with childcare costs.

In New Zealand, a serving police officer is among those facing criminal charges related to an alleged $18 million fraud. The investigation was conducted by the New Zealand Police National Integrity Unit, a body established in 2020 to address corruption and wrongdoing within the force. This case follows several other prosecutions involving police staff for various offenses, highlighting ongoing scrutiny regarding internal corruption and financial integrity within the country's public sector.
