Annalena Baerbock faces US and Russian criticism over UN selection process
Annalena Baerbock, President of the UN General Assembly, is facing sharp criticism from the United States and Russia regarding her role in the selection process for the next UN Secretary-General. As António Guterres's term concludes on December 31, eight candidates are currently competing for the position.
Both the US and Russia have accused Baerbock of overstepping her authority and interfering in the mandates of the UN Security Council. US Ambassador Jennifer Locetta described Baerbock's actions as 'unprecedented, non-transparent, and unfair,' specifically citing a public poll of candidates organized by Baerbock on July 23. Locetta further characterized the approach as 'hypocrisy' and 'unresponsible.'
Russian Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia expressed concern over the role Baerbock is attempting to assume. The dispute centers on Baerbock's request that the Security Council not consider candidates who have not participated in a dialogue with the General Assembly. While Baerbock maintains she is advocating for a 'transparent, inclusive, structured, timely, and credible' process, critics argue that the responsibility for recommending a candidate rests solely with the Security Council through secret ballots.
