Nord Stream: US and Russia discuss American investor involvement

High-level US and Russian officials, including US Special Envoy Jared Kushner and Russian advisor Kirill Dmitriev, have held discussions regarding the potential involvement of American investors in the Nord Stream pipelines. Kushner, who is working toward a truce between Russia and Ukraine, views economic engagement as a potential tool for restoring peace. The discussions reportedly took place in Moscow and New York in recent weeks.

If a deal were reached, it would allow US companies to profit from energy flows to Europe once the conflict ends. However, significant obstacles remain. The Nord Stream pipelines are currently subject to both US and EU sanctions, making their operation illegal under existing restrictions. Furthermore, European nations, particularly Germany, have expressed strong opposition to resuming gas flows via these pipelines, having already established alternative energy sources.

Any potential agreement would require formal negotiations with the US Treasury Department and the US International Development Finance Corporation (DFC) to ensure benefits for American taxpayers and companies. Additionally, discussions have reportedly touched upon the potential sale of Lukoil assets, including refineries and gas stations in Europe, to international investors through a consortium involving the DFC and partners from Qatar and the UAE.
