US and South Korea agree to coordinate on North Korean nuclear threat

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Tae-yul held a telephone conversation to reaffirm their commitment to a close alliance and cooperation regarding North Korea's nuclear program. The two diplomats agreed to maintain intensive communication to promote peace on the Korean Peninsula and uphold a strong joint defense position.

The discussion occurred amid concerns that the administration of US President Donald Trump might shift focus away from North Korean denuclearization as he seeks to rebuild relations with Kim Jong Un. While the ministers emphasized the importance of addressing the nuclear issue, official statements did not explicitly reiterate a specific commitment to denuclearization.

In addition to regional security, the leaders discussed the Middle East and bilateral cooperation in areas such as investment and security. The ministers also agreed to meet in person in the near future to address unresolved issues. South Korea also expressed its readiness to assist in ensuring free navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.
