US and South Korea cut joint military exercises by half FAST-MOVING
The United States and South Korea are cutting their ongoing ‘Ulchi Freedom Shield’ military exercises by half. According to the South Korean General Staff, the drills will now conclude this Friday at the request of the United States, rather than continuing until August 27 as originally scheduled.
President Donald Trump criticized the exercises, stating they sent an ‘inappropriate and hostile signal’ to North Korea. He cited his positive relationship with Kim Jong Un as a reason for the reduction. Reports indicate that while defensive drills against simulated North Korean attacks will continue, the previously planned counteroffensive component has been entirely removed from the program.
This decision comes amid concerns regarding North Korea’s military capabilities and its growing cooperation with Russia. Analysts note that North Korean troops are reportedly gaining battlefield experience from the conflict in Ukraine. In response to the ongoing exercises, North Korean state media warned that any violation of their sovereignty would result in ‘devastating retaliatory measures’.
