U.S. and South Korean military leaders inspect DMZ readiness

U.S. Army Gen. Xavier Brunson, commander of United Nations Command, Combined Forces Command, and U.S. Forces Korea, and Republic of Korea Air Force Gen. Jin Young-seung recently inspected frontline security and operational readiness along the eastern Demilitarized Zone (DMZ).

During the visit, Gen. Jin expressed concern regarding recent military activities by the Democratic People's Republic of Korea near the Military Demarcation Line. He directed troops to remain vigilant against potential surprise attacks, noting that fog and dense foliage present security challenges. Gen. Brunson reaffirmed the strength of the ROK-U.S. alliance and the commitment to maintaining credible deterrence.

Separately, defense minister nominee Kang Shin-chul is drawing attention for his extensive military background and close working relationship with Gen. Brunson. Having served as deputy commander of the Korea-U.S. Combined Forces Command, Kang is noted for his understanding of U.S. military strategy and policy. Officials suggest his experience may assist in sensitive negotiations regarding joint military exercises and the transfer of wartime operational control (OPCON).
