U.S. to refill Strategic Petroleum Reserve using Venezuelan oil
U.S. President Donald Trump announced that the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) will be replenished using oil from a new agreement with Venezuela. The SPR has reached its lowest level since 1982, sitting at approximately 289.7 million barrels. Trump described the Venezuelan oil as a ‘gift to the American people’ and stated that the process of refilling the reserves would begin soon.
Under the terms of the deal, which Venezuelan interim President Delcy Rodríguez stated will last 25 years, the U.S. aims to gain majority control over significant portions of Venezuela's 65 billion barrels of proven oil reserves through partnerships with private companies. The agreement involves the development of 17 strategic oil fields, with an initial production target exceeding 1.5 million barrels per day.
While Trump claims the deal will eventually lower gasoline prices for consumers, he noted that the impact may not be immediate and could take time to manifest. Experts have noted that operating the SPR below 250 million barrels poses risks to infrastructure. The deal is expected to attract approximately $100 billion in investment to revitalize Venezuela's oil industry.
