United States accuses Brazil of failing to combat PCC and CV criminal factions
The United States government, under President Donald Trump, has issued a formal determination accusing Brazil of failing to effectively combat the Primeiro Comando da Capital (PCC) and Comando Vermelho (CV). In a document sent to the U.S. Congress, Washington classified these groups as foreign terrorist organizations and asserted that they have transformed Brazil into a global hub for cocaine distribution, posing a growing threat to international security.
The administration is calling for Brazil to adopt more aggressive measures to defeat these organizations. Notably, while the U.S. criticized Brazil's performance, the country was not included in the formal list of the 23 major drug producing or transit territories for the 2027 fiscal year.
In a separate development regarding regional drug policy, President Trump announced that Venezuela has been removed from the list of countries failing to meet drug control commitments. This decision follows the arrest of Nicolás Maduro and cooperation with an interim government. The U.S. also indicated it may consider similar status changes for Colombia depending on future progress in cocaine eradication.
