U.S. Announces $5 bn AI‑Centric Science Initiative to Stay Ahead of China

The White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, led by director Michael Kratsios, presented a new science strategy to the House Science, Space, and Technology Committee. The plan emphasizes artificial intelligence, quantum computing, advanced manufacturing, fusion energy and space technology as priority sectors for U.S. leadership.

More than fifteen federal agencies, including the Departments of Energy, Agriculture, Health and Human Services, NASA and the National Institute of Standards and Technology, pledged over $5 billion for AI‑driven research under the “Genesis Mission.” Republicans framed the effort as essential to maintain a technological edge over China, while Democrats warned it could undermine existing scientific ecosystems.

The initiative is also expected to affect key partners such as India, as the United States seeks to coordinate allied research and development in the emerging AI race.
