US Arctic Military Gaps Undermined by Greenland Purchase Talk, Experts Say

Experts argue that acquiring Greenland would not resolve the United States' challenges in the Arctic. Kenneth Rosen, journalist and author of *Polar War*, said, “the notion that taking Greenland could improve the situation is a falsehood.” The core problem is insufficient investment in aging military infrastructure, with thawing permafrost destabilising bases and a limited Coast Guard presence – only one heavy cutter, the Polar Star, operates in the region.

Russia has meanwhile expanded its Arctic capabilities, operating 42 icebreakers, including 13 heavy vessels that can function year‑round, giving it a clear advantage. The United States has begun projects such as a deep‑water port at Nome, but the gap with Russia remains large. Analysts also stress the need for greater collaboration with local Alaskan communities to sustain any military effort.
