General Charles Costanza removed from U.S. Army V Corps command

Lieutenant General Charles Costanza, commander of the U.S. Army's V Corps, has been abruptly removed from his position nearly two months before his term was scheduled to end in October. The V Corps, which maintains a presence in Poland, plays a critical role in coordinating U.S. military support for Ukraine and managing American forces along NATO's eastern flank.

The Pentagon has not officially disclosed the reasons for the decision. While the removal occurs amidst a broader reorganization of high-ranking military leadership led by Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, sources cited by ABC News suggest that Costanza's departure is not related to Hegseth's restructuring efforts nor motivated by political considerations. One report indicated potential personal issues regarding alcohol, though this has not been officially confirmed.

Brigadier General John B. Mountford will serve as the interim commander. Major General Thomas Feltey, who had already received Senate approval to succeed Costanza, is expected to officially take command in October.
