US Army accelerates counter-drone and high-altitude balloon testing
The US Army is accelerating the testing and deployment of counter-drone technology and high-altitude surveillance systems. Through a partnership between the Southern European Task Force, Africa, and the Global Tactical Edge Acquisition Directorate, the military aims to deliver operational capabilities to soldiers within 180 days of identifying urgent requirements.
A scheduled capability event in Tan-Tan, Morocco, set for spring 2027, will focus on protecting military command posts from small unmanned aircraft. The Army noted that Africa provides ideal testing conditions due to its varied terrain and uncongested airspace.
Additionally, the Army is exploring the use of high-altitude balloons for surveillance and communication. Lt. Gen. John Rafferty, commander of the Space and Missile Defense Command, described the technology as “game-changing” after observing its use in Morocco. These stratospheric systems, operating between 60,000 and 100,000 feet, can remain airborne for extended periods to serve as surveillance tools, communications hubs, or platforms for drone swarms.
