U.S. Army activates air defense battalion in Guam

The U.S. Army has activated the 3rd Battalion, 43rd Air Defense Artillery Regiment at Andersen Air Force Base on Guam. This move transitions the island's air and missile defense from the rotational Task Force Talon, which operated in the region since 2013, to a permanent military formation.

The new battalion is part of the Guam Defense System and will provide a layered defense network against ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, aircraft, and drones. It is expected to operate Patriot, Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD), and Intermediate Fires Protection Capability (IFPC) systems.

This activation reflects a strategic shift to establish permanent air defense capabilities in the Indo-Pacific to counter regional missile threats, including those from North Korea and China. The unit falls under the 38th Air Defense Artillery Brigade and the 94th Army Air and Missile Defense Command, supporting joint operations and protecting critical infrastructure in the western Pacific.
