U.S. Army awards $2.2B for nuclear microreactors
The U.S. Army has launched the Janus Program, awarding up to $2.2 billion to private and public vendors to build, own, and operate nuclear microreactors at five domestic military installations. The program aims to enhance energy resilience and power projection by providing reliable, localized baseload power, reducing reliance on vulnerable external grids and fossil fuel supply chains.
The Army expects more than 20 microreactors to be deployed across installations. The five selected vendors and their respective locations are:
• Antares Nuclear, Inc.: Fort Bragg, North Carolina • BWXT Advanced Technologies, LLC: Fort Campbell, Kentucky • General Atomics Electromagnetic Systems: Fort Hood, Texas • Radiant Industries, Inc.: Fort Benning, Georgia • Westinghouse Government Services: Fort Drum, New York
In partnership with the Defense Innovation Unit (DIU), the program utilizes a vendor-owned operating model. For example, BWXT Technologies is slated to deploy a 20-megawatt reactor at Fort Campbell, with a projected groundbreaking in late 2028 and operations beginning in the early 2030s. These modular, factory-built reactors are designed to be transportable via standard truck, rail, air, or barge.
