AeroVironment secures $464.8 million U.S. Army laser contract

The U.S. Army has awarded AeroVironment a $464.8 million contract for the production of LOCUST X3 high-energy laser systems. This marks the first-ever production contract for a high-energy laser weapons system in U.S. history under the Enduring-High Energy Laser (E-HEL) program.

The 30 kW LOCUST X3 systems are designed to provide a low-cost, layered air defense against Group 1–3 unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). Unlike electronic jamming, the laser provides a physical means of disabling drones, ensuring they cannot be reused for repeated surveillance. The systems are modular and can be integrated into various platforms, including the Joint Light Tactical Vehicle and Infantry Squad Vehicles.

In recent field tests along the U.S.-Mexico border, the technology contributed to a reported 75% decline in drone activity after destroying 11 suspected cartel-linked drones in 10 days.

Financially, AeroVironment reported record first-quarter fiscal 2027 revenue of $480 million, driven by strong sales in its autonomous systems segment. The company also secured its first international order for the LOCUST directed energy counter-drone system, valued at $50 million.
