US Army dismantles specialized drone battalion in Europe

The United States Army has ordered the dismantling of a specialized drone battalion based in Europe. The unit, part of the 173rd Airborne Brigade with headquarters near Vicenza, Italy, was established to study and apply tactical lessons learned from drone warfare in the conflict in Ukraine.

Under the direction of Acting Army Chief of Staff General Christopher LaNeve, the approximately 600-soldier unit will return to its traditional role as an airborne infantry battalion following recent maneuvers in Germany. This decision marks a shift toward a “back-to-basics” strategy, reversing a previous transformation initiative aimed at integrating modernized unmanned systems across all formations.

During its period of operation, the battalion experimented with artificial intelligence, electronic warfare resistance, and the design of custom drones. While military experts have expressed concern that this move could slow the Army's adaptation to modern battlefield realities, the Army maintains its commitment to developing drone and counter-drone capabilities for future combat scenarios.
