US Army faces Patriot missile shortages as unit costs rise

The United States Army is facing challenges in meeting its Patriot missile procurement targets due to rising unit costs. Budget documents indicate that the cost of a single PAC-3 MSE missile has increased by over 30 percent since 2022, with projections showing prices rising from approximately 3.8 million dollars in fiscal year 2023 to nearly 5 million dollars by 2027.

This price surge has directly impacted delivery quantities. For instance, an 885.7 million dollar budget originally intended to secure 230 munitions is now expected to yield only 194 units. These rising costs coincide with a massive increase in demand; the Army recently raised its total PAC-3 MSE procurement goal from 3,376 to 13,773 units.

Stockpile depletion remains a critical concern following munitions usage during operations involving Iran and ongoing shipments to Ukraine. In response to these financial pressures, Army Secretary Daniel Driscoll has indicated a focus on developing more economical alternatives within the next year.
