Fort Rucker Revives Solo Helicopter Cross-Country Training and Expands Tactical Drone Course

The U.S. Army has reinstated instructor‑free cross‑country helicopter training for flight students at Fort Rucker, Alabama. After about 25 years, the new curriculum added by the 1st Battalion, 223rd Aviation Regiment includes a two‑week cross‑country segment during the Basic Warfighting Skills phase, with flights of 50 to 100 nautical miles that require students to independently plan routes, manage navigation, and communicate with civilian air‑traffic control.

Simultaneously, Fort Rucker’s Unmanned Advanced Lethality Course is being upgraded to increase tactical realism. Course leaders Staff Sgt. Mario Rostran and Chief Warrant Officer 3 Robert Gatta have raised the number of kinetic engagements from five to twelve and introduced a culminating exercise featuring close‑quarters battle tactics. Students now conduct live‑engagement drills using the Shank 1.0 system and C4 explosives, aiming to better integrate unmanned aircraft systems into future Army aviation operations.
