U.S. Army grounds Apache flights after fatal Texas crash
The U.S. Army has temporarily suspended all AH-64 Apache training flight operations following a fatal helicopter crash near Fort Hood, Texas. The incident occurred on Wednesday, August 12, during a maintenance test flight near Salado. The crash resulted in the deaths of two pilots: 34-year-old Chief Warrant Officer 2 Deontre T. Huey and 25-year-old Warrant Officer Seth L. Olmstead, both assigned to Bravo Company, 1st Battalion, 227th Aviation Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division.
The crash sparked a wildfire that burned approximately 155 acres and necessitated emergency responses and local evacuations. The Army Combat Readiness Center, based in Fort Rucker, Alabama, has arrived at the scene to lead a safety investigation into the cause of the mishap.
The grounding of training missions will remain in effect until the root cause of the accident is understood. The incident has drawn international attention, particularly in India, where the Indian Air Force also operates the AH-64E Apache variant.
