U.S. Army reassesses aviation cuts as it trains NATO forces in Poland

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth told lawmakers the Pentagon is re‑examining the steep reductions proposed for the Army's aviation budget in the FY‑27 request. The cuts would slash procurement for Apache attack helicopters from $361.7 million to $1.5 million, Black Hawk utility helicopters from $913 million to $39.3 million, and Chinook heavy‑lift helicopters from nearly $629 million to $210 million. Lawmakers expressed concern that such cuts could damage the defense industrial base and weaken capabilities used for lift, disaster response, and homeland missions.

At the same time, U.S. Army soldiers participated in an Autonomous Triage and Treatment Challenge near Bemowo Piskie, Poland, as part of NATO’s Eastern Flank Deterrence Initiative. From April 27 to May 31, about 15,000 troops from eleven nations will train across the High North, Baltic region, and Poland, testing drone‑based medical evacuation and rapid treatment concepts to demonstrate NATO’s ability to fight on a modern battlefield.
