U.S. Army selects five winners in humanoid robotics competition

The U.S. Army has selected five companies as winners of the xTech|Humanoid competition, an initiative designed to evaluate how commercial humanoid robotics can support future military operations. The competition aimed to assess the maturity of emerging technologies and establish a technical baseline for integrating humanoid systems into the Joint Force.

By utilizing commercial humanoid forms, the Army seeks to reduce soldier exposure to dangerous and physically demanding tasks while preserving combat power. The evaluation focused on critical technical factors, including energy supply, robust actuators, tactile sensing, and software for command clarity. The demonstrations, held at Marine Corps Base Quantico, allowed military leaders and technical experts to observe how these systems function in complex environments.

This effort is part of a broader autonomy push led by the Humanoid Community of Collaboration (HCoC), established in late 2023. According to U.S. Army Chief Technology Officer Dr. Alex Miller, the xTech program serves as a method to survey the industry landscape and fast-track promising technologies rather than relying on lengthy studies.
