U.S. Army selects M1 Support Services for helicopter pilot training overhaul

The U.S. Army has selected M1 Support Services to implement ‘Flight School Next,’ a major overhaul of its Initial Entry Rotary-Wing (IERW) training program. Under this new contractor-owned, contractor-operated model, the Texas-based company will provide aircraft, instructors, maintenance, and simulators to train between 800 and 1,500 aviators annually at Fort Rucker, Alabama.

The deal, valued at up to $10 billion over 26 years, marks a significant shift from the traditional model where senior military pilots served as instructors. The program aims to modernize training that has remained largely unchanged since the 1960s, focusing on foundational flying skills using simpler aircraft, such as the Robinson R66, before students transition to advanced military helicopters like the AH-64 Apache, UH-60 Black Hawk, and CH-47 Chinook.

Army leadership stated the transition is intended to increase training capacity, improve the foundational skills of junior pilots, and achieve significant long-term cost savings. While M1 Support Services will manage entry-level training, the Army will maintain oversight of follow-on training for specialized aircraft.
