US Army shifts toward electric and hybrid combat vehicles

The US Army is shifting its long-standing cautious approach toward electric vehicles to accelerate the development of hybrid and electric combat technology. This transition focuses on addressing unique battlefield requirements, such as extreme terrain navigation, battery safety, and the need for low acoustic and thermal signatures.

A key component of this initiative involves the development of unmanned hybrid-electric supply vehicles designed to transport materials to forward lines without risking personnel. To support this, California-based Harbinger Motors has signed an 18-month contract with the US Army. The project will also involve Forterra, which specializes in autonomous vehicle technologies, and Primordial Labs, which focuses on human-machine interaction.

The push for autonomous and unmanned logistics follows observations from the conflict in Ukraine, where unmanned systems have proven highly effective in both aerial and ground operations.
