U.S. Army tests autonomous barges and robotic vehicles

The United States Army is advancing its use of autonomous technology to enhance operational flexibility and soldier safety. In recent testing, an MH-47G Chinook helicopter successfully landed on an unmanned barge to resupply, marking a transition from conceptual models to real-world application. These autonomous vessels utilize Sea Machines’ SM300 technology, which employs AI-driven computer vision, radar, GPS, and AIS sensors to navigate and avoid obstacles.

Additionally, the Army has conducted tests at Fort Hood, Texas, using autonomous Polaris vehicles to scout potentially dangerous routes. The objective is to deploy robotic systems for reconnaissance, transport, and support during the initial phases of a mission, allowing machines to encounter threats before human soldiers. These efforts aim to integrate various unmanned platforms—including drones and remote-controlled vehicles—to reduce risk and extend the reach of tactical units.
