US Army deploys heavy tank battalion to Lithuania

The Lithuanian Ministry of Defense has announced the deployment of a US Army heavy battalion to Lithuania, ending a months-long absence of rotating US forces in the country. The deployment, expected to arrive by late October, will consist of approximately 1,000 soldiers, including a heavy battalion equipped with M1 Abrams tanks and Bradley fighting vehicles, as well as an engineer battalion.

The US forces are scheduled to remain in Lithuania for nine months. The engineer battalion will support the development of the Lithuanian army division and participate in border protection and defense projects. This move is part of the broader Baltic Defense Line project, a joint effort by Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia to reinforce their eastern borders.

Lithuanian Defense Minister Robertas Kaunas recently discussed these deployments with US Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense Elbridge Colby. While the deployment strengthens NATO's eastern flank, discussions regarding the potential establishment of a permanent US military base in Lithuania are ongoing, though no final decision has been made.
