US Army to deploy nuclear microreactors at five military bases
The US Army has announced the Janus Program, an initiative to deploy advanced nuclear microreactors at five military bases to ensure energy resilience and independence from the commercial electric grid. The program aims to install more than 20 microreactors across various installations, with the first unit expected to be operational by September 30, 2028.
The Army has awarded up to $2.2 billion over five years to five selected companies to own, construct, and operate these reactors. Funding is contingent upon companies meeting specific technical milestones. The selected vendors and their respective locations include Antares Nuclear at Fort Bragg, North Carolina; BWXT Advanced Technologies at Fort Campbell, Kentucky; General Atomics Electromagnetic Systems at Fort Hood, Texas; Radiant Industries at Fort Benning, Georgia; and Westinghouse Government Services at Fort Drum, New York.
These microreactors are designed to be compact, factory-assembled, and mobile, generating between 1 and 20 megawatts of electricity while occupying less than five acres of land. Officials stated that the technology is intended to provide a reliable power source for critical infrastructure in the event of grid failures, cyberattacks, or disruptions to fossil fuel supply chains during conflicts.
