U.S. Army to spend $2.2B on nuclear microreactors
The U.S. Army is advancing its Janus Program, a $2.2 billion initiative to deploy approximately 20 portable nuclear microreactors across five domestic military bases between 2028 and 2030. These reactors, which typically generate between 1 and 20 megawatts of electricity, are designed to provide stable, localized, and resilient power, reducing reliance on traditional electrical grids and the logistical risks of transporting fossil fuels to remote or frontline locations.
Five vendors have been selected to design and deploy the technology at specific installations: Antares Nuclear at Fort Bragg, North Carolina; BWXT Technologies at Fort Campbell, Kentucky; General Atomics Electromagnetic Systems at Fort Hood, Texas; Radiant Industries at Fort Benning, Georgia; and Westinghouse Government Services at Fort Drum, New York. This push for advanced nuclear technology mirrors efforts by major tech companies to secure reliable energy for AI and data centers.
