U.S. authorities warn of heightened terrorism threat ahead of 9/11 anniversary

Federal authorities have issued a bulletin warning that foreign terrorist organizations continue to encourage attacks in the United States, often releasing propaganda ahead of the 9/11 anniversary. The FBI expressed concern that actors may be inspired to conduct violence or hoax threats in response to the 25th anniversary of the attacks, noting that such individuals often act with little to no warning.

The Department of Homeland Security described the current terrorism threat environment as “heightened and increasingly complex.” Officials noted that while centralized international organizations like ISIS and al-Qaeda remain threats, the landscape has shifted toward a more dispersed model where individuals and small cells plot attacks independently.

Additionally, authorities highlighted the ongoing threat of domestic terrorists driven by anti-government views. In the past 18 months, the FBI has arrested at least 16 people within the U.S. for allegedly plotting or supporting plots to kill Americans on behalf of al-Qaeda or ISIS.
