US baby naming trends shift toward creative spellings and vintage styles

New data and expert forecasts highlight shifting trends in baby naming within the United States. According to Social Security Administration data from 2025, there is a growing preference for nonstandard or creative spellings of traditional names. For example, ‘Klarity’ has emerged as a fast-growing name for girls, alongside variants like Kaleb, Camryn, and Madiysn. Mississippi leads the nation in the share of births using variant spellings.

Looking toward 2030, naming experts predict several distinct movements. There is a resurgence of vintage names such as Alma, Edith, Pearl, and Willa. For boys, short and surname-style names like Crew, Hayes, Lennon, and Winston are gaining traction. Additionally, international names with Italian and Spanish roots, such as Luca and Matteo, are becoming increasingly common, reflecting a broader cultural influence on naming choices.
